Hugh had told Mike he'd meet him at Arches for coffee, but then they'd had a string of minor emergencies at the bakery, and then there was traffic and by the time he got there he figured Mike would be on his second cup. He looked around, checking the tables to see where Mike was sitting.

Yesterday, I was a bug on the windshield of life. Today... I'm not. Also, am at Cass's. She kidnapped me.

Sorry about that folks.

Well, not about the kidnapping. About the bug part.

So according to my journal I have now been sick - getting only marginally better and worse in between - for seventeen days. Now that just isn't right, seriously.

Hank? Think I'm gonna have to impose on you.

The sound of Alex's voice was muffled by the pillow he was holding over his face. "I told you!" he said. "If you come near me to poke me with something one more time, I'll suffocate myse... Oh. Tony. Hey." He looked sheepish as he peeked out from beneath the pillow.

Cassidy was, to the great annoyance of the nurses, sitting on the counter at the nurse's station, swinging her legs under her short skirt and waiting on JP. When she saw him, she popped the lolly pop out of her mouth and hopped down. Her eyes were huge when she squealed, bouncing over to him, "Like. Oh my god, Jay-Pee! I was totally waiting forever."

The nurse behind the counter made a strangled sound. This had clearly gone on for a while.

Sometimes she made her own fun.

Phee did not like today.

It wasn't just the test in bio or the stupid story Elliot had made them read for class or the phone call she'd gotten from her mom or the stupid cheerleaders who'd been too busy giggling to get the hell out of her way in the hall.

No, it was none of these things in particular which made Phee not like today.

It was all of them together which made her feel she had a personal vendetta against this particular 24-hour period.

Because she was grumpy, Phee did what she always did when she was grumpy: She put on her hiking boots and her most worn-out clothes and went to find a patch of forest (or, since this was Florida, swampy muck) through which she trudged and tromped while fuming and grumbling to herself until she'd worked up a completely disgusting sweat and had to collapse underneath a tree with a groan.

Wren had homework up the wazoo. It sat it piles and stacks and color-coordinated arrangements (What? It was organized!) around the surface of a table in the Arches cafe. She was really working very hard...or at least, she meant to be working very hard, really she did, except she kept getting sidetracked and would chew on her pencil for a good ten seconds before she remembered it wasn't a sugar quill and therefore tasted totally horrific.

She'd lied when she told James she didn't worry because of course she worried, she worried a lot, actually, and right now she was busy trying to decide what to worry about. There were so many choices.

She was so busy worrying about worrying, she didn't notice someone sit down across from her.

He was fairly certain that hanging out at the beach late at night in a city like Tampa was pretty much asking for trouble, but then, he'd sort of been missing trouble, really, and anyway, not being female anymore--particularly not having to look in the mirror and see that female--was worth celebrating.

Plus, much as he loved his closet, it did get a bit stifling sharing it with a robotic dog and a dead TARDIS (the other him'd been right: it really was rather morbid). Not to mention that everytime he tried to leave he invariably ran into some extremely harried City Hall intern. Literally. He had the bruises to prove it.

So. The beach at night it was. He sat under a tree and enjoyed the sound of waves as he looked up and tried to remember which star was which.

Susi arrived a little while later and made her way to the ward where Alex was apparently staying. And not dead.

She'd tried to neaten up a little, but her eyes were really red and she'd forgotten the fact that she'd put mascara on this morning. She looked like a crumbled raccoon with a bad cold.

It was a complete coincidence that Susi saw the news. She had run down to the nearby cafe to buy lunch and the television was on. She didn't pay attention till she heard Alex's name.

Then she just stood there, while tears began to run down her face.

It couldn't be true. Not Alex.

The television high in the corner of the waiting room was playing the news. The anchorwoman looked concerned as she read off the report.

"One man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a city bus hit his bicycle. Alexander Durance was admitted to Tampa General with multiple fractures -- including one to his skull -- but no other details on his condition have been released.

Witnesses say..."

A doctor removed his surgical mask as he approached two figures holding hands tightly as they sat in the uncomfortable chairs. He looked confused. Befuddled, even.

"Ms. Knight? Mr. Bartlet? I don't know how to tell you this... I'm not even sure what the hell happened. But Mr. Durance is fine. He died on the operating table but he came back." With no help from his staff, he'd admit later. "In fact, he appears to be recovering from all the injuries he suffered during the accident. It's ... well, a miracle."
